After breakfast and lunch, it’s time for after-work drinks! There are two places I love for getting the evening started: Time Out Market and Sky Bar at the Tivoli hotel.
Time Out Market opened in 2014, taking the idea of a traditional public market and giving it a modern twist. It brings a wide range of local food businesses together under one roof. In the lower part of the city, this market hall combines delicatessen products, street food, a wine shop and a cocktail bar.
I’ll let you judge for yourself.
From 6 pm, Time Out Market starts buzzing and becomes a real hive of activity. You’ll have to work a little to find a table before choosing from the hundreds of food and drink combinations in this celebration of good living. Personally, I love the croquettes and fish tartares.
Event producer tip: you can hire a space for around thirty people for a cooking workshop, or simply enjoy delicious Portuguese and international food.
Once you’ve enjoyed your first beer, glass of wine or cocktail and a few petiscos — Portuguese tapas — I suggest taking a tram up towards Avenida da Liberdade for one last pre-dinner drink. My second favourite place for a drink is Sky Bar at the Tivoli hotel. It’s a fantastic rooftop with incredible views over the old town and a great house soundtrack, which I love. I’ll write a more detailed review in a future instalment of the Rooftop selection series.
Now you’re ready for dinner at one of Lisbon’s exciting restaurants: Mini Bar Theater by José Avillez. José Avillez is the chef, owner and businessman behind Belcanto — with two Michelin stars — Beco Cabaret, Bairro do Avillez and around ten other Lisbon restaurants. His creative, refined cooking is highly regarded by local and international food lovers.
As its name suggests, Mini Bar Theater is a small bar in a former theatre. It serves some of chef Avillez’s most inventive and popular creations as tapas. You’ll enjoy a wonderful food experience accompanied by very good cocktails.
If you’re spending several days in Lisbon, I’d also recommend the Fifty Seconds experience, the Beco Cabaret dinner show, or the Michelin-starred Feitoria and Belcanto.
That brings this Lisbon series to a close! I hope you enjoyed it. Feel free to add your favourite places in the comments.
