If you’ve been following me, you’ll have noticed that I haven’t posted anything on the blog since April 2020, and the same goes for Instagram. At the beginning of the pandemic, I thought that not travelling or organising events would boost my creativity and give me more time to create blog content…
Two years later, I have enough distance to say that it has been one of the hardest periods of my life for motivation and creativity. I still consider myself fortunate: I haven’t caught the virus or lost anyone close to me.
But this period has made me realise how much motivation and creativity need to be nurtured every day if you don’t want them to fade.
It’s now June 2022, and I can tell you that my motivation hasn’t returned to its early-2020 level. You don’t need to be a psychologist to understand why. The crisis still doesn’t feel over, restrictions remain despite the collective effort and vaccination, tensions between vaccinated and unvaccinated people are growing, and economically I don’t think we’ve hit the bottom yet — far from it.
Professionally, 2021 was extremely frustrating. Planning more than two weeks ahead was impossible, which made it very difficult to build a good event calendar. The result? Last-minute decisions, stress, frustration, plans B, C, D… all the way to Z, and very little that felt fun or adventurous. Webinars, webinars and more webinars on Webex.
We managed to adapt by using the last reserves of creativity we’d built up in 2019 to create our own in-house studio. I think we did a good job, and I’m very proud of what we built as a team. In 2020, video and webinars replaced events and, statistically, kept us just as busy as in a normal year. In 2021, we returned to a reasonable number of physical and virtual events, while the amount of video content we produced soared. Personally, I’m exhausted! 🙂
Now the question is: what next? That’s where the difficulty lies. We have this great tool — the studio — but we need to renew the content formats and its look and feel. I can’t take the London background any more…
Of course, not everything depends on my team, but the expectations are there. And I think we all need something new to rebuild our motivation.
Still, I’ll end on a positive note. I now understand more about how my creativity and motivation work. I’ll be able to recharge so that 2022 can be a better year than the last.
PS: I also hope it will bring more content to this blog and to my Instagram account, @the_traveler_marketer.
